Zoë Modiga finds the truth of true love in the author of love for her debut single, “Love (Yahweh)”

It was Alicia Keys who famously sang, “How many really know what love is? / Millions never will / Do you know until you lose it?” Many people spend their entire lives trying to bed down what love really is and means to them but right off the bat, Zoe Modiga is introducing herself to the world with a lovesong to end all lovesongs: “Love (Yahweh)”.

Your first single is always the hardest. What will the very first message you put out to the world be? A lovesong is the obvious choice but this isn’t your traditional pop love tune. For that matter, it isn’t even pop. This jazz number is the mortal human mind’s attempt at understanding how the very author of love, Yahweh, could love you and I so, and what it may potentially mean for that love to be taken away. And it does all of this with the same pop-appeal finesse that the Liras and Jill Scotts of the world have managed to infiltrate into their jazz sounds.

Anyone who has frequented Cape Town’s Tagore’s or The Crypt in the last four or five years would understand the words ‘first single’ as being used fairly judiciously. Modiga has enjoyed a handful of years in jazz lounges mesmerising with her well-rounded set of covers and original material, first as part of jazz vocal group, Soul Sessionz and later on as a solo act. “Love (Yahweh)” has been a mainstay of said set and therefore logically follows as her introduction to the world.

Beyond Cape Town, the world has already had a taste of Modiga thanks to a successful run on the first local season of The Voice. Though she didn’t take the title of season 1 winner, her undeniable display of talent prompted Universal Music to sign her anyway.

A hot mustard yellow single cover art represents “Love (Yahweh)” as a bold declaration of a set apart career trajectory to come. She hasn’t waited to receive in order to thank her creator and author of her talent; she has come off the bat ready to pave a clear path of where she sees herself going. And although she has carefully considered it all, she’s marching full force into her destiny, six-inch stilettos and all.
