Alek Blak: The young self-taught singer-songwriter bubbling under
Meet the one-part quirk, two-parts talent singer-songwriter from Butterworth with more than enough ambition to put his hustle on
The nom de musique of Butterworth-born Yamkela Mdaka recently emerged on national radio as Alek Blak. Though we were first introduced to the singer-songwriter two years ago through a (now private) YouTube video under the name his mama gave him, Alek Blak’s musical journey actually began at least three years before that.
Like most of the new artists blossoming up on the radio, YouTube and Apple Music playlists, he taught himself piano and guitar. Of his songwriting, he attributes the genesis of that journey to Lauryn Hill though his lyrical landscape paints personal experience pictures. ‘HeartBeat’ – our August 2013 introduction to him – revealed the searing feeling of an inescapable love for another.
Fast forward two years, and a new song, tentatively titled ‘A New Day’, is a lush showcase of the singer’s guitar sensibilities and auburn warm timbre. You might have even heard him croon during a recent SAfm interview-cum-taste-of-what’s-to-come-performance. Living by his mantra of “putting on your hustle”, has gotten him this far – a baited breath anticipation will guide us to his debut project should the time arise to have one released. Ahead of that, we can confirm that an iTunes single release is due mid October. Until then, get your fill of ‘New Day’ and get to know the one-part quirk, two-parts talent Alek Blak below.
